Talking to Your Doctor
Things to tell your doctor
Your doctor is your partner in health. Share responsibility by telling your doctor at each visit about:
- How you're feeling
- Your symptoms, no matter how small
- Medications you're taking
- Allergies you have to medications
- Recent doctor visits, test results and surgeries
Questions to ask your doctor
Get ready for your doctor's visit by writing down your questions, which may include:
- What's my diagnosis?
- What are all my options for treatment?
- Which treatment is better?
- What are the side effects?
- What are you testing me for? [if a test is ordered]
- What will the results tell me?
- What does the medicine your prescribing do?
- Is there a generic medicine I can take?
- Do I need to have surgery, or is there an alternative? [if surgery is prescribed]
Consider taking notes, or bringing someone along to help you remember what is said at your appointment.
